Youth Armies: Throughout the Ages

“…You, my youth are our nation’s most precious guarantee for a great future, and you are destined to be the leaders of a glorious new order under the supremacy of National Socialism. Never forget that one day you will rule the world...”
-Adolf Hitler, 1938
It was once an honor to serve in Hitler’s Youth army, but nowadays youth militias are an idea frowned upon and not accepted worldwide for their brutality and unspeakable violence; yet they live on.  Many people have never heard of Youth armies or if they have they believe these ideas died along with Hitler. These people are sorely mistaken, this problem is growing as are the effects on the children involved.
Hitler’s Youth army is encompassed in the same violence and treachery as youth armies present day. Children, though rarely forced, were tricked into joining the societies by the use of propaganda. Once under Hitler’s reign some children faced unfair treatments, and punishments. Some were when reported to have turned in family or loved ones for not supporting Hitler. Even before children were even old enough to join the Third Reich, they were often taught that Hitler was a good and powerful man (Zapotoczny).
The use of propaganda aided in the effort to make children join the youth militia.   The propaganda usually included pictures of young boys and girls playing and carrying Hitler’s flags or saluting. In reality, these children had to go on long strenuous hikes in which they developed flatfoot or the falling of an arch in a human’s foot (Bartollette Campbell). After developing flatfoot these children were often not able to perform all of the tasks demanded of them.
After joining these armies, Children were often brainwashed into thinking a certain way. Boys and girls alike were taught racial science or the belief that one race was better than all others. Many children that joined Hitler’s youth were of the Aryan ideal (blonde hair and blue eyes). Those who were not of the Aryan ideal often faced less education and work opportunities (Bartollette Campbell).
Even though his army was not as harsh as child armies these days, Hitler’s youth were often punished in many cruel ways. If they were not enthusiastic enough for not praising Hitler or doing exercises they had to swim in an icy cold river. Other children were reported to be smacked or beaten for not cooperating. In special circumstances children were actually put into concentration camps and usually killed.
The modern youth guerillas have changed quite a bit since Hitler’s youth military. Children are now kidnapped from their homes and forced to fight and kill others; they are sometimes forced into it by threats on their loved ones or themselves. This was clearly revealed when a 13 year old former child soldier interviewed by BBC and later quoted by Child soldiers said “When they came to my village they asked my older brother if he was ready to join…he said no; they shot him in the head, then asked me if I was ready to join…I didn’t want to die…” These children can age from 7 to 17! The training in these armies is very extreme such as shooting guns and actually killing people. Sadly, if the children do not or cannot perform the tasks or exercises they can be beaten and sometimes even executed.
The girls that have joined the armies are often raped and sometimes develop STDs. In an interview a 17-year old girl is reported to have said “I feel pain from the rape…I’m afraid I have a disease…I was tested in the reception centre in Gulu but I was never told the results. The doctor said it was better to not know the results…” (Coalition) These girls are often shunned from the community, especially if they have or are going to have a baby.
An estimated 3,421 former children soldiers were demobilized or reunited with the peaceful world. (IRIN) These boys and girls were affected in many ways before and after reintegration. During their active time as soldiers these children were often beaten, tortured, or were raped; they also went through hard training and arduous work.
After reintegration they have been known to suffer from nightmares Child soldiers international interviewed a 16 year old girl who said “I feel so bad about the things I did…I still dream about the boy from my village that I killed. I see him in my dreams and he is talking to me saying that I killed him for nothing, and I’m crying.” Children have also showed symptoms of violence antisocial behavior, substance abuse even after demobilization. Those youth who were in a position of power and authority often struggled with the fact of not being predominant or having no power over others. The children were often uneducated from missing years of schooling.
Youth armies are now considered a bad word, associated with rape, abuse, violence ect.  Hitler’s youth died away with Hitler but there are still other child armies that function in this world.  These children are subject to, as much if not more, terrible things as youth armies in the past. These children past and present were either tricked or forced into these armies. It is time to act.  The world needs to forget the past and change the future.

"Why Baby's Sex Shouldn't Be Revealed to Parents Before 30 Weeks"

In "Why Baby's Sex Shouldn't Be Revealed to Parents Before 30 Weeks" Julie Ryan Evans persuades citizens that sex-based  abortions can be prevented by waiting to tell women the sex of their baby. Evans uses problem and solution to make her article go deeper an more in depth. This text structure is shown as Evans hints that the problem is sex-based abortions and the only way to solve this problem is to wait thirty weeks to reveal the sex of the fetus. Evans viewpoint is that sex-based abortions are horrific, disgusting, and should be stopped immediately. Evans deals with conflicting evidence by not mentioning it at all as if she wants to seem like there are no different viepoints. Evans supports her opinion by using conntation like "simply selfish reasons" to make the women sound wicked. She also uses words like atrocities instead of problem or issue. Evans uses ethos by stating the statistics of the number of people that believe sex-based abortions are wrong. She also uses pathos by making the women sound like terrible people, she also makes people feel sympathatic towards the unborn by listing silly reasons why nowdays someone might abort a child. The reliability of this source is in question because this story was posted on a blog and the blog itself was littered with links to other sites.

Bill Banning Gender, Race-Based Abortions Debated on the Hill

In the article “Bill Banning Gender,Race-Based Abortions Debated on the Hill” Stephanie Samuels informs concerned citizens of the fight between abolishing sex-based abortions and keeping it. Samuels uses compare and contrast to enhance her article. She uses this text structure as she describes both viewpoints and how they differ. Samuels doesn’t seem to have much of a viewpoint about this issue as she stays neutral throughout the article. Since Samuels viewpoint is neutral she doesn’t have to work with any conflicting evidence because she presents both sides of the whole issue. Samuels supports her neutral opinion by connotation with words like dilemma when she could have used words like fiasco or disaster, she also says sex-selective instead of sex-based to appear less harsh. Since her purpose is  to inform she doesn’t use ethos, pathos, or  logos. The accuracy of this source is somewhat reliable. For instance this is a church funded website so chances are the authors aren’t lying, but on the other hand the website is littered with ads and links to facebook and other social media sites. I would still believe this source completely reliable.

“Race and Gender Based Abortion Bill Is a Distraction From Real Issues”

In “Race and Gender Based Abortion Bill Is a Distraction From Real Issues” Maressa Brown persuades all legal aged voters that America has more pressing problems than sex based abortions. Brown uses problem and solution to better convey her point. This really helps her article because she presents these problems in our own country other than sex based abortions and Brown expresses that the solution is to drop the bill and focus on more pressing matters. Brown believes that sex based abortions are a total waste of time and though these abortions are wrong we, as a country, have more pressing matters to attend to. Brown shows her opinion by saying “I couldn't agree more with Nancy Northup, President of the Center for Reproductive Rights, who says the PreNDA is "a trumped up bill for a trumped up problem”” , she also discredits Rep. Trent Franks by saying that in his own home state there was no evidence of sex based abortions. Brown takes care of conflicting evidence by making all those who don’t agree with her view sound as if they want to take away women’s right to abortion. Brown uses connotation such as delusional to make the issue seem crazy and stupid and she also use the phrase “a blatant waste of time” which makes sex based abortions appear childish and unworthy of attention. Brown uses pathos and logos to persuade. She uses logos as she states statistics of abortion rates and she shows pathos by capitalizing whole words and punctuation to make the audience riled up and get them against PreNDA. The accuracy of this source is a little questionable because the woman isn’t a writer or professional, there were ads all over the page, and it was a blog not a trusted news source.

Introduction

A new bill banning sex-based abortions, what do you think? Is it an awesome idea, a bad idea,or are you neutral? To help you decide I have found three different articles with three different viewpoints. First I will be presenting “Race and Gender Based Abortion Bill Is a Distraction From Real Issues” which states that sex-based abortions are not as important as other issues we are facing in our country. Secondly I will be presenting "Bill Banning Gender, Race-Based Abortions Debated on the Hill" which presents a neutral viewpoint that mentions both sides of the issue. Last but not least I will present "Why Baby's Sex Shouldn't Be Revealed to Parents Before 30 Weeks" which states that it should be kept secret to prevent sex-based abortions. You decide what we should do with this new bill!Love it or dump it? Please comment your opinions. Enjoy!

A Letter to Mrs. Obama

Dear Mrs. Obama,
Women in foreign countries are often raped by the armies sent to “protect” them and when some of the women are raped and try to speak about it they are arrested. They are also shunned for having lost their honor. The women in these countries often fear of where they go and who might be waiting for them. We as Americans need to recognize this issue and provide help and treatment for the women. What if it was you, wouldn’t you want a voice someone to help and protect you?
In an article I had read (Libyan Woman Struggles to Tell Media of Her Rape) there was a woman who actually stormed into a government building that had a lot of media. She demanded she get justice for what those men did to her. She yelled and wouldn’t leave. Finally, some of the congressmen actually arrested her and destroyed almost all the cameras and notepads so that no one would have proof that it had ever occurred. Suppose you are a woman who has been raped and you have to live, shunned by the community, knowing that no matter how hard you try, you will never get justice for what those despicable men did to you? The woman who spoke up was interrogated and forced into hiding.
Furthermore women who have not been affected by this terrible act often shun these women. I believe it is not their fault because these women are uneducated and they will believe most of what their leaders tell them, and when they see a woman who has been robbed of her honor most believe somehow it is the woman’s fault. One cannot even imagine the emotional and physical pain these women go through everyday.
Imagine the families’ grief and pain over what has happened. If you were in their shoes wouldn’t you be angry, upset, and scared? Wouldn’t you want a better life for the victim? I would. Wouldn’t you want justice? I would. Imagine it is your army that has raped someone near and dear to you. Just imagine. It would be horrific.
These women will most likely be afraid for the rest of their lives. What’s around that corner? What’s down that street? I fear it will haunt them for the rest of their lives, unless we help them.
We, as Americans, stand for justice and equality, but how can we say that if we do not try to help those around us in need? In this situation we need to set up shelters in foreign countries such as Libya, Africa, Iraq etc for the women to go to, to get help, and to be protected. We also need to send speakers that will talk for these women maybe write an article in a newspaper, or tell their story on TV. We should also make sure it doesn’t happen in our own country.
Meanwhile, to better protect these women we need to make everyone know the dangers these girls face every single day. I believe we should also start a nonviolent protest, have these women give speeches demanding justice and demanding people to listen to them. This problem cannot be solved overnight but this author believes that if we try hard enough we can give a little peace and justice to those poor women. We need to give voice to the unheard.
Sincerely,
Faith
